Vinyl ester or epoxy.

These resins form durable laminates and coatings. These coatings typically exceed both polyester and epoxy in corrosion resistance temperature resistance and elongation toughness. The hardener catalyst for vinyl ester resin and polyester resins is mekp. Vinyl ester resin or often just vinyl ester is a resin produced by the esterification of an epoxy resin with acrylic or methacrylic acids.

Vinyl esters also use peroxides e g. Cloth and polyester resin. Epoxies belong to a family of resins which are epoxy functional which means they can be cured with amine curing agents at room temperatures to form excellent adhesives and composite resins. It adds excellent strength rigidity adhesion water and chemical resistance.

Epoxy vinyl ester resins ver are an important class of high performance thermoset molding resins. Vinylester is essentially a styrene modified epoxy resin. The vinyl groups refer to these ester substituents which are prone to polymerize. They are produced by the addition of α β unsaturated carboxylic acids to epoxy resins.

Vinyl ester resins are typically formulated from styrene and a condensation product of methacrylic acid with an epoxy. Vinyl ester resins are produced by the reaction esterification between an epoxy resin and an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid. Epoxy adheres to wood much better than polyester does. You can put epoxy over polyester but not the other way.

Resins are bisphenol a diglycidyl ether dgeba and epoxy phenol novolac epn. Epoxies polyesters and vinylesters represent two resin families. To cover wood a laminate using epoxy resin and 10 oz cloth will yield a much better job than 10 oz. Vinyl ester can be used for concrete and steel tank linings or as a concrete floor topping.

The curing process is radical initiated. This condensation product acts as a crosslinking agent and to improve adhesion to glass fibers. Epoxy s base is amine which is a different family altogether. Polyester will not stick to epoxy but vinylester will.

Vinyl is similar to polyester. Polyester is small chain carbon whereas vinylester is long chain carbon which makes it more flexible.
