In order to replace the window regulator you need to take the door panel off by removing the armrest bolts and door handle screws. The plastic retainer may have opened up and allowed the rod to drop off the latch. Your window glass is secured in place by the window regulator. You have to remove the interior panels to expose a hole in the sheet metal through which you detach the handle.
